WERNER BUSCH's "BONSAI" book, has been published with various covers, depending on which language the original german edition (viewed here) has been translated into. In English, this book was printed for a "step-by-step Garden Guide" series. Its a small book, 6" x 8" and 96 pages. The first 40 pages deal with general introductory information, including bonsai history, styles, maintenance including watering, soil, fertilisers, then creating bonsai using the correct tools, wiring, and pruning. Finally, Herr Busch provides some info on buying and propagation.The part of the book dealing with tree species, contains a color photo of the tree, including two pages of information on the tree, its care, feeding, etc. "BONSAI" covers 12 broadleaf varieties including Japanese maples, trident, elm, cotoneaster, howthorne, etc. Then, it continues with 5 conifer species, including ginko (maidenhair), juniper, larch, mountain pine, and japanese white pine, and finally ten indoor bonsais (tropicals), including fukien tea, ficus, myrtle, olive, pistachio, pomegrante, chinese elm, podocarpus (kusamaki) and others. The book includes a small index.I would warn americans who need a book on bonsai, about the problems buying a book like this, written in Germany, and then translated for the British market. The USA has a HUGE variety of climates, so you cant nessacarily extrapolate information about the German or European climate, and apply it your area. Also, Europeans grow many different bonsai species than the Americans. We cant get good Olive trees here, but in Europe, they are easy to come by. Same holds true with other species. Some things like soil mixtures, are different here, and certainly the brand names for fertilizers and insecticides. For basics, this book isnt too bad tho. Also, its FILLED UP with lots and lots of clear color photos. Altho not a bad introductary level bonsai book, if you need information on Scheffleras (Umbrella trees), japanese black pine (and its special pruning requirements), citrus, Dawn redwood, cypress, and other common species found in US bonsai nurseries, you will be OUT OF LUCK. This might be a book that doesnt give you what you need. Just sayin'.
